Gastric bypass surgery risks

Gastric bypass surgery is a complex operation in a complex group of people, when it works, is very effective, but involves real risks.

Gastric bypass surgery risks

The early risks associated with gastric bypass surgery for the treatment of obesity ,can be much greater than previous thought.According to the new research studies , the long-term advantages of gastric bypass surgery in prevention of death , outweigh the risk .

Two new studies highlight the risks and advantages of gastric bypass surgery increasingly popular or related to obesity operation such as gastric bypass surgery to treat obese people ,in medical terminology who are morbidly obese .

The first research study shows that the risk of death in early 30 days after gastric bypass surgery is at least four times greater than reported, and much of this risk is attributable to the surgeon's inexperience hands.

It turns out that 1 out of 500 or 1 out of 200 risk of death that people are generally listed by best gastric surgeons, according to researchers, because in the real world ... the risk of dying within 30 days after surgery is one in 50 patients .The next study also showed that long-term risk of dying was much lesser in those who have had gastric bypass surgery compared to non-obese subjects.

The long-term advantages to reduce the risk of death was taken in another study which showed that obese people who have had gastric bypass surgery was 89% lower risk of death for the following 5 years,as compared with severely obese people who did not get surgery. An another research shows that gastric bypass surgery is not risk, but these risks can be worth it in the long term.

It has been cleared that gastric surgery is the most effective treatment for those people who have extreme obesity, and more expensive in financing costs  and  in mortality, but the advantages clearly outweigh the risks appropriately selected individuals.

The popularity of gastric bypass weight loss surgery in the treatment of obesity in the United States has grown rapidly in recent years, more than 10 times increase in the number of performed surgeries in 2001 compared to 1987. This increase number of surgeries was due to the increase in obesity and the availability of less invasive laparoscopic surgical procedures.

In fact, research has shown the number of gastric bypass surgeries performed in the patients increased by 250 percent after laparoscopic gastric weight loss bypass introduction in 1997.

A research compared the number of deaths after gastric bypass surgery in more than 3,300 obese individuals who underwent the procedure from 1987 to 2001 with those observed in a group of more than 60,000 equivalent thereof, obese people who do not have the gastric bypass surgery .

The researchers found the immediate risk of mortality after gastric bypass weight loss surgery , it was much greater than previous study , particularly:
  • In 1.9 percent of patients with gastric bypass surgery died in early 30 days after the gastric surgery ,It is four times higher than the rate of about 0.5 percent proposed by smaller previous research.

  • About half of all early 30 days deaths after the patient has returned from the hospital.

  • The risk of death in early 30 days after gastric bypass surgery was almost five times greater if the surgeon had performed fewer than 20 gastric surgeries if the  gastric surgeon was more experienced.

  • Among cases where the patient died in early 30 days after gastric bypass surgery, 81 percent was with the expert gastric surgeons first 19 gastric bypass .

The study also showed that obese individuals who have undergone gastric bypass surgery, risk of death was much lower in the long term. After fifteen years of follow-up, 16 percent of obese people who did not have gastric bypass surgery died compared to 12 percent of those who had surgery .

Long-term advantages of gastric bypass surgery reduces the risk of death was higher among young patients who were younger than 40 and morbidly obese. Over 13 years of follow-up, only 3 percent  of those who had the gastric surgery died  , in comparison with 14 percent  of morbidly obese  individuals  who did  not have the surgery .

The key is that bariatric surgery, including gastric bypass surgery is a complex operation in a complex group of people, when it works, is very effective, but involves real risks.

According to second study results confirm that the gastric bypass surgery is a complicated procedure that comes with a certain degree of risk that should not be taken lightly. It is a lesson for people who are thinking about surgery to really go well with a surgeon who has proven experience and have done in centers with experience to do the operation, there is a baseline risk of death rose from the operation, which appears to be much greater in inexperienced hands as compare to the experience hands. ....... read more
