Laparoscopic weight loss surgery is perform through a small video camera,

Laproscopic weight loss surgery

Obesity is a common problem in the U.S. In 2002, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that 2/3rd of American adults are overweight. Treatment of obesity is very difficult, especially when the patient does not fix a breaker problem. Low-calorie, balanced diet low in fat are usually recommended, with the exercise. Strict diets and diet drugs are generally discouraged. Patients weighing over 100  lb over their ideal body weight or calculation of body mass index (BMI) increased from 35 to 40 are considered overweight. (To calculate your BMI, multiply your weight by 705. Divide the result by your height in inches. Divide again by your height .) Massively obese  individuals have an greater risk of diabetes, hypertension, cardiac disease, hyperlipidemia , sleep apnea (temporary cessation of breathing during sleeping ) and osteoarthritis.

Gastric weight loss surgery may be done in two ways with :

Open weight loss surgery : your surgeon will make a big surgical  incision in the  wall of abdomen to open up this. Surgeon will perform the bypass by direct handling your stomach, small intestine, and other key organs.

Laparoscopic weight loss surgery : Another way to perform this operation is to use a small video camera, known as a laparoscope, which is introduced in the abdomen. This is known as laproscopy in this surgical procedure.

Since the 1990's, laparoscopic techniques have been used in a various general surgeries. Many individuals mistakenly believe that these type of techniques are still in research ( experimental ) . In fact, laparoscopic procedures has become the predominant procedures in few areas of surgery and has been used for weight loss surgery for last several years. When an surgery is performed laparoscopically, a small video camera is introduce into the abdomen. The surgeon can view the all procedure on a separate video monitor. Most laparoscopic surgeons  that believe this gives them more better visualization and give proper access to key anatomical structures. The  video camera and surgical instruments are introduced via small incisions in the wall of abdomen . This laparoscopic approach is considered minimal invasive because it converts the need for a big incision to open the abdomen for a vast surgical field. The following diagrams show the incisions in a laparoscopic surgical procedure compared with the incision made in an open procedure .

A recent  research studies shows that patients had less pain experience of laparoscopic surgery after weight loss surgery , which facilitates breathing and lung function and higher levels of oxygen content. Other benefits performed by laparoscopy were less wound complications like infections or hernia, and patients return back more quickly to pre-operative levels of activity. The following photos shows an example of cut during a laparoscopy, the picture shows an example of necessary cuts to an open surgery

Intervention by laparoscopy for weight loss surgery employ the same principles as  in the open weight loss operation and it can give similar benefits for excess weight loss. All patients are not good candidates for this approach, just not all surgeons are trained in advanced techniques needs to perform this minimally invasive procedures. American Society for Obesity Surgery recommends that laparoscopic weight loss surgery should be performed by experienced surgeons in both laparoscopic and open procedures for weight loss.

Those considered for laparoscopic weight loss surgery must be carefully evaluated. Investigations are conducted to assess the health of the cardiovascular, respiratory and endocrine patient. A psychological evaluation is required by most physicians to determine the response of a potential patient weight loss and changes in body image and ability to change their lives permanently. Nutritional counseling is also necessary before surgical procedure.

Types of laparoscopic weight loss surgery

Different laparoscopic (minimally invasive)weight loss surgical procedures have evolved in an attempt to circumvent or avoid part of the stomach. The procedure we perform  is isolated

  1. Laproscopic gastric bypass
  2. Adjustable gastric banding
  3. Sleeve gastrectomy

  • 4 to 6 small incisional openings (each less than 1/2 to 1 inch long incision ) are made in the abdomen. These  incisional openings allow the surgeon to pass a light, a  video camera and surgical instruments into the abdomen to the key anatomical structures .

  • The abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide gas to allow the surgeon a better view of the stomach and key internal structures. Surgical instruments like the width of a pencil is introduced into the abdomen to finish the surgical procedure .

  • In a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, more than 95% of the stomach bypassed, and a little  part (about the size of an egg) remains functional.

  • In an adjustable gastric band laparoscopic weight loss surgery, the stomach is tight or limited to the location of the strip, which may be adjusted after the surgery, which are needed to further weight loss.

  • Sleeve gastrectomy is the removal of 2/3rd of the stomach with the intestinal bypass.

  • Most patients recover from surgery without any complications.

  • The hospital stay is usually one  to three days.

  • You can stop working for 2-4 weeks.

  • Once you are at home, you must follow certain dietary guidelines. Your dietitian will help you to understand and adapt these guidelines.

  • Regular follow-up visits are scheduled after surgery in the first year to asses their physical and mental health, metabolism and  status of nutrition.

  • Many patients need plastic surgery (abdominoplasty) one to two years after weight loss to remove skin folds around your abdomen.

Weight loss surgery is not a miracle procedure. It does not guarantee that you will lose all your excess weight or keep it off long term. Weight loss success after gastric bypass surgery depends on the commitment to lifelong changes in eating habits and physical activity. But the sense of achievement, how to lose weight and improve their health are significant benefits are well worth it.

Laproscopic weight loss surgery may not be safe for you if you had
  • Previous abdominal surgery . This is because you may have scar tissue previous surgeries.
  • Have severe heart or lung disease .
  • Weigh over 350 pounds
